Imagine being able to ride in cold weather with clothing that emulated all the best features of your summer-weight kit: bibs that didn’t restrict breathing, a chamois as good as the one in your best shorts, and lightweight materials that didn’t feel bulky or restrictive. The Castelli Sorpasso Bib Tights are part of Castelli’s Rosso Corsa line of products, and as a result, they get the Italian manufacturer’s very best treatment in materials, design, and fit. The Sorpasso Bib Tights begin with Castelli’s top-of-the-line Progetto X2 pad, the same pad found in their best shorts. The top layer that contacts your skin is a made from a seamless, four-way stretch microdenier fabric designed to move in harmony with your body and eliminate the chafing that can come with materials with too little stretch. It receives an antibacterial treatment and is bonded to a variable thickness pad made from multiple density foams; the result is a smoothly contoured pad that places the firmest foam where support is most needed. Perforated inserts help to relieve pressure on the sit bones and perineum — just where riders experience the greatest pressure. The front of the tights are cut from Thermoflex Core Due to keep the wind out. This two-layer material traps air in a hollow-core layer of polyester while moisture is transported to the outer nylon/Lycra layer where it can evaporate. A simpler fabric, Thermoflex, is used for the portions of the tights not exposed to the wind for greater breathability. Giro++ grippers keep both the bib straps and ankles in place. It’s rare to find bibtights that are this light and this warm. Like the bibs in the Rosso Corsa line, the waist of the Sorpasso Bib Tights is cut very low to eliminate restrictions on breathing caused by pressure on the belly. The Castelli Sorpasso Bib Tights are Black/white and are available in six sizes from Small through XXX-Large.

It’s impossible to overstate the effect on cycling clothing produced when the red scorpion of Castelli met the blue argyle of the team formerly known as Garmin-Cervelo. Named after the cyclist who first requested an item like it, the Gabba Jersey has become a staple in the peloton, regardless of clothing sponsorship, and set a benchmark that other manufacturers are scrambling to reach. With the Fawesome 2 Vest, Castelli brings the updates of the new Gabba 2 Jersey to the line’s sleeveless counterpart. The Fawesome rocks the same Windstopper X-Lite Plus fabric on the front and shoulders, where body meets wind. Windstopper X-Lite Plus has 1. 4 billion impossibly small pores per square-inch that guard your microclimate jealously. They don’t let wind or rain in, but they do let water vapor out. And when the marketing materials claim this fabric is windproof, you can actually believe them. A given material’s wind resistance is measurable in a rating called CFM, which stands for cubic feet per minute, used to measure the volume of air that passes through a fabric in, you guessed it, one minute. In order to be considered truly “windproof,” a fabric must register a CFM of equal to or less than 1. 0. All fabrics bearing Gore-Tex’s Windstopper branding meet or exceed this rating, so they are literally windproof. The vest’s back is made with Nano Flex Light instead of Windstopper X-Lite Plus, which — besides the lack of sleeves and pockets — is the Fawesome’s only apparent variance in construction from the Gabba Jersey. As far as we can tell, this is also the reason why it’s the Fawesome 2 Vest and the Gabba 2 Vest. Nano Flex Light is a flexible, thermally insulating material that’s been coated with countless nanofilaments in order to add water-resistance. It gives flex across your shoulders and ventilates better than the vest’s front, helping to regulate your body temperature for rides where the full Gabba 2 would be too warm. The Fawesome 2 is also packable, so you can…

Sometimes your core needs an extra layer between it and Mother Nature’s varying conditions. A base layer won’t keep the drizzle away, but a full jacket is overkill. Castelli’s Velo Vest is a lightweight breathable alternative that easily packs in your pocket when the sun starts to shine. Zip it up over a long sleeve jersey and be prepared for impromptu drizzle. Castelli used Forcefield Fabric to construct the Velo Vest. This extremely lightweight fabric is a 30 gram, ripstop material that is windproof and water-resistant. It was given a DWR (Durable Water Resistant) coating. It’s so light, in fact, that you’ll barely notice you’re wearing it. Additionally, it is highly breathable so that when you are working up a sweat you won’t get drenched from the inside-out. Furthermore, the vest features mesh side panels to help heat ventilate from your core. It should be noted that while the Velo vest is ideal for drizzle or windy conditions, it is not constructed with fully taped, waterproof seams. If you need a layer to keep a deluge at bay take a look at the Castelli Pocket Liner JacketThe vest was cut with a longer back for better coverage. A high mesh collar keeps drizzle from running down your neck, and when the sun comes out, the mesh neck turns into a pocket in which to store the entire vest. It only takes up half a jersey pocket so it’s perfect to carry on those days when the sun doesn’t look like it’s going to keep the rain at bay. Castelli added a reflective logo and back tabs to increase your visibility in low-light conditions. Castelli’s Velo Vest is available in six sizes from Small to XXX-large and in four colors: White, Orange fluo, Lime, and Black.

Don’t put your bike away when temperatures drop. Just slide the Castelli Trasparente Full-Zip Jersey onto your shoulders and put it in the wind. The Trasparente is a cycling-specific women’s stretch softshell top with strategically placed fabric panels optimized for warmth and comfort in the saddle. There’s a good bit of Italian style thrown in there, as well. Castelli used Windstopper X-Lite fabric for the areas that will be most affected by the wind during a ride. The front of the torso and the forearms are made with this 2-way stretch, completely windproof fabric. And, while it keeps the wind from freezing you out, it’s moisture-wicking and extremely breathable. That means it not only allows water vapor to escape to avoid clamminess, but it pulls moisture away from your skin and moves it to the surface of the fabric, where it’s quickly evaporated. The back of the jersey is made with Castelli’s Warmer–a plush, fleecy fabric that traps heat while allowing moisture to escape. The jersey also features three back pockets, a 3. 5cm gripper at the back, and a specially designed collar with a notch at the back that prevents bunching when you’re looking up in the seated (pedal) position.

Castelli’s Evoluzione Bib Shorts challenged our notions of what a sub-$100 pair of bibs could be. By including its famed KISS3 chamois, and the ultra-wicking ProDry2Strati fabric, Castelli pretty much had this one won before anyone else had their lead-outs sorted. Not content to stop at fabrics and chamois, though, the Evoluzione is also cut from 8 different panels of fabric to ensure a precise fit. These panels are then sewn together with a dual-needle stitch for durability. Castelli finishes off the job with molded-in silicone leg grippers to keep the shorts in place and comfortable.
